FAQs

Hail & Storm

  • What do I do before a hail or storm event?

    Inspect Your Property for Vulnerabilities
Check your property for any loose items such as outdoor furniture, tree branches, or garden ornaments that could become hazards in strong winds or hail. Secure or move them to a safe area.

Tip: Use heavy-duty straps or ropes to secure larger outdoor items, such as trampolines or outdoor tables.
    Trim Trees and Branches
Trim any overhanging tree branches that could fall onto your property or vehicles during strong winds or hail. This helps reduce the risk of damage to your roof, windows, or power lines.

Tip: If trees near your home are large or unstable, consult a professional arborist to assess and safely remove them before a storm.
    Protect Vehicles
If possible, park your vehicles in a sheltered area, such as a garage or under a carport, to protect them from hail damage. If you can’t, consider using a car cover to reduce damage from hailstones.

Tip: If parking is not an option, move your car to a location with minimal exposure to falling trees or debris.
    Prepare an Emergency Kit
Make sure your emergency kit is stocked with essentials such as water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and important documents. Keep it in a safe, easily accessible place.

Tip: Include power banks or extra chargers for your devices to stay connected in case of power outages.
    Stay Updated on Weather Warnings
Regularly monitor weather updates from reliable sources like the Bureau of Meteorology or your local emergency services. Pay attention to warnings for severe storms or hail events.

Tip: Set up weather alerts on your phone to receive real-time notifications about storm developments.
    Stay Informed
Monitor weather alerts and flood warnings through the Bureau of Meteorology or local emergency services.

Tip: Set up emergency alerts on your phone to get real-time warnings.
  • What should I do during a hail or storm event?

Stay Indoors and Away from Windows
Remain indoors at all times during the storm. Avoid windows, glass doors, or skylights, as they could shatter due to flying debris or hailstones.

Tip: If possible, move to an interior room or hallway, away from any external walls and windows.
Stay Safe in the Event of Hail
If hail begins to fall, stay indoors immediately. Hailstones can vary in size and cause serious injury or damage to property.

Tip: If caught outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building or car and avoid areas where hail is likely to cause damage, like under trees or near glass structures.
    Avoid Driving
Driving in stormy conditions can be dangerous due to heavy rain, flooding, and reduced visibility. Avoid driving during the storm, especially if hail is falling.

Tip: If you’re already on the road when the storm hits, pull over safely to the side of the road, away from trees or overpasses, and stay in your car until the storm subsides.
    Monitor Power Outages
Keep a flashlight or battery-powered light handy in case of power loss. Avoid using candles to prevent fire hazards.

Tip: If power lines are down, stay clear of them and report the issue to local authorities immediately.
  • What should I do after a hail or storm event?

    Inspect Your Property for Damage
Once it’s safe, assess your property for damage caused by strong winds, hail, or flooding. Look for damaged roofs, windows, vehicles, and outdoor structures.
    Document Damaged Items
Take clear photos or videos of all damaged areas, including personal property. Record details such as the make, model, and serial numbers of items that have been affected.
    Dispose of Damaged Goods
If hail or wind has caused significant damage to your possessions, dispose of any items that are beyond repair or that pose a health risk, such as broken glass or items with mold.

Tip: Keep receipts for any emergency purchases, as they may be needed for your claim.
    Stay Clear of Dangerous Areas
Avoid downed power lines, flooded roads, and areas where debris or structural damage could pose additional hazards. Be cautious when walking around your property.

Tip: If trees or branches have fallen, avoid trying to remove them yourself, as they may be unstable or electrical lines may be tangled.
    Check for Water Damage
If rainwater has entered your home, do not turn on electrical appliances until the property has been inspected by a licensed electrician. This can help avoid electrical hazards.
    Mitigate Further Damage
Take emergency steps to prevent further damage, such as covering broken windows or using a tarp to cover roof leaks. Keep records of any repairs or emergency actions taken as part of your claim.
    Don’t Throw Away Salvageable Items
If you have items that can be repaired or cleaned, don’t throw them away. Many personal belongings, including furniture and electronics, can be restored with proper care.
